First Responder PTSD
Last reviewed: June 2026
Who this is for: Law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics living with work-related PTSD — even without a physical injury.
What this is
Compensable PTSD benefits (established 2018; qualifying events defined 2023) for law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics. A physical injury is not required.
Compensable PTSD requires one of the specific qualifying traumatic events defined in 2023 (e.g., the loss of a child, witnessing grievous bodily harm). Whether your situation qualifies depends on the event — a rep or WC attorney can confirm.
What to do next
Talk to your union rep or a workers’ compensation attorney to determine whether your traumatic event meets the statutory qualifying-event list.
